Audience Research - Year 7 Class

As part of my audience research, I attended a Year 7 class and had a discussion with them about what kind of album covers they like, would they buy it, and why. I achieved this by showing them multiple album covers from a variety of artists from different genres on a presentation.

Out of these two album covers of female artists, which one would you prefer and why?

These two artists are the original artists of the songs that my class mate and I are producing the music video for. We thought that it would be a good idea to have the Year 7's initial reponse to these artists.

The whole class prefered the JoJo's album cover. They said that the reason for this is that JoJo was much prettier looking than Pink out of the two album covers. They didn't understand why Pink looked so agressive and this put them off. Even though the Pink album cover did have flowers and stars on it, they liked the layout of JoJo's album cover because they could see her better and "she looked nicer". Also, some said that they would choose JoJo because she was younger than Pink.

Out of these two album covers of male artists, which one would you prefer and why?

Moving onto male artists, the class wer split suprisingly. My prediction was that most of the class if not all would choose Justin Bieber's album cover but a lot expressed that they didn't much like Justin Bieber's album cover simply becuase they don't like Justin Bieber. I asked them to try and ignore the popularity of the artist and how much they knew about him and concentrate on the appearance of the album cover. However this failed to improve the feedback that was given. Some, because of their dislike of Justin Bieber, said that "if they had to choose, it would be Michael Buble".

The opinions on Michael Buble's album cover was that he again was "too old" and looked "too serious" and this was used as reasons as to why some of the class chose Justin Bieber's album cover over Michael Buble's.

These album covers are graphical images made on the computer. Which of the two do you prefer and why? And does it matter that the artists are not on the album cover?

Again the whole class agreed to one album cover, and this was the Mika album cover. The views on the Mika album was very positive as the class liked the use of bright, primary colours and catoons in the album cover; "if i saw that in the shop it would catch my eye." However, some said that the small image of the artist could've been bigger as if they saw that album cover in the shops they wouldn't know who's album it was.

The Coldplay album cover was not approved of at all. As it is a huge contrast in colour to the Mika album cover, it did not appeal to the class at all. Even though, it was explained that the image on the Coldplay album was a significant painting, it caused no extra interest in the album cover as it appeared "boring".

These are album covers of two male bands. Which of the two would you prefer and why? Does it matter that the JLS album cover doesn't have an album name; just the name of the band and an image of the band?

JLS was the top vote between these two album covers and I believe this was because of the popularity and appealing look of the boy band itself. Therefore, this vote on album covers can be seen as biased.

When questioned why there was dislike for the Take That album cover, the reason of the band being "too old" sprand back again as the JLS members were much younger even though they were balancing on high wire did look "cool".

In response to the last question, it was said that the name of the band and an image of the band members was enough on the album cover for JLS because it wouldn't matter to them.

These are album covers of two female bands. Which of the two would you prefer and why?

The feedback for this question was that they all prefered The Saturdays album cover over The Pussycat Dolls album cover, even though some said that they liked some songs by The Pussycat Dolls. They said that The Pussycat Dolls looked too revealing and "needed to put some clothes on". Also, it was said that The Saturdays look more nicer and I think this is because of their inviting facial expressions and the bright primary colours that are used on the seats that The Saturdays are sat on as well as clothes and shoes.
Here are three album covers from female artists. What are your opinions on how they are dressed and posing? Would you buy any of these albums? Would your parents allow you to with album covers like these?

All members of the class had said that they would not be allowed to buy any of these album covers as the clothes and poses that the artists are in are too revealing and over sexualised. Even though some said that they listened to Rihanna's songs, they still made it clear that they did not like the Russian Roullette album cover because of her near nudity costume.
Here are the last two album covers of popular female artists. Which of the two would you prefer and why?

In this question, the class majority did not like the Christina Aguilera album cover as it looked "disgusting" because of its graphical detail. Personally, I think it is interesting to see the detail of the graphics and the meaning behind the robot features.

Again the artists beauty was considered when making their decisions. This meant that Kylie Minogues album cover was more popular than Christina Aguileras album cover as she looked "more pretty with the make up and nail polish".

Overall, this audience research has told me that the younger audience prefer an album cover that is simple, doesn't necessary need to have a deeper meaning, the artist should look groomed and "pretty" and colours used must be bright and attractive.
